My Favorite Things for Nickel and Iron Oxide Allergy

Whew! What a week!  I just finished my first FULL WEEK of teaching Kindergarten (this year). Trying to get 23 four and five year olds how to be "civil" students is quite a huge task.  I never get used to the start of the school year in Kindergarten.  It truly makes me think of herding cats!

"How are we gonna get all these situations?"

Oh, Sorry!! I am off topic.
Yes, that is how my mind has been running all week.

I Decided To Think Of My Favorite Things

For Nickel and Iron Oxide Allergies

Naturally Nickel Free Jewelry

Donna Jo Wallace is the artist who creates earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and charms that are nickel-free.  Donna even offers custom design jewelry pieces.  She made custom earring charms for me, which I LOVE!

100 Percent Pure

I love the Fruit Pigmented Cosmetics offered by 100 Percent Pure! God was good to me in advance of my diagnosis of nickel allergy.  This site appeared in my Facebook news feed a couple of weeks before my allergy testing. I am so grateful that I now have some cosmetics I can wear.
NOTE: If you have exclusively nickel allergy, cosmetics may not be an allergy trigger for you.  But if you have IRON OXIDE allergies, like I do, you need to find alternatives to the big name cosmetics, as well as to the "natural" brands.

I use Fig eyeshadow, which also can serve as my liner.  And Champagne is my lighter color.

I enjoy the Pomegranate lip glaze.  It is a bit light, but when I use a lip liner, it is just right. The circle sample makes it look more pink than it actually is. These lip glazes so NOT have the lasting power of regular lip sticks or glazes.  Sorry!

Herbatint Hair Color

When I realized my Nickel/Iron Oxide Allergy was impacted by the hair color that I use each month, I was horrified.  I could not imagine going without coloring my hair! Even most of the "natural" hair coloring products include Iron Oxide.  So when my friend Terrie, the health food store owner, told me about Herbatint, I was very interested, but leery. I wasn't sure this product could do the job.

I was extremely surprised at how wonderful Herbatint did the job! I wouldn't go back to the traditional hair color now, even IF I could! Even my beautician commented on the improvement of the condition of my hair, now that I am using Herbatint.  I get many more compliments on the shiny look it gives my hair.

The Grain Brain by Dr. Perlmutter

Renowned neurologist David Perlmutter, MD, blows the lid off a topic that’s been buried in medical literature for far too long: carbs are destroying your brain. And not just unhealthy carbs, but even healthy ones like whole grains can cause dementia, ADHD, anxiety, chronic headaches, depression, and much more. Dr. Perlmutter explains what happens when the brain encounters common ingredients in your daily bread and fruit bowls, why your brain thrives on fat and cholesterol, and how you can spur the growth of new brain cells at any age. He offers an in-depth look at how we can take control of our “smart genes” through specific dietary choices and lifestyle habits, demonstrating how to remedy our most feared maladies without drugs.

My Kineseologist/Chiro recommended that I read this book after I told him about my diagnosis of Nickel and Iron Oxide allergy.  The basic reason is because this allergy is likely a result of inflammation of the brain due to gluten and too much sugar.  Perlmutter also writes about the importance of getting a LOT more healthy fats into our diet to promote health.

After eating Gluten-Free for 5 months, many of my most extreme areas of inflammation have cleared up tremendously!  I hope to continue a Gluten-Free diet from now on.

I have met quite a few other Nickel allergy sufferers who also discovered that Gluten-free living helps with their symptoms. So I am not alone.  In fact, I decided to focus on Gluten-free eating versus the Nickel Avoidance Diet.
Read more about my story toward Gluten-Free living here.

Note: I am STILL going to try to avoid touching items with high Nickel and Iron Oxide content.

Pamela's Dark Chocolate Chunk Cookies

I know, I know!  These are NOT sugar-free.  But when I need a cookie and chocolate fix, these do just fine!

Coco Roons (Costco)

Oh........My...........Gosh!!!! These are just so good!

Ugly Gloves

When I just can't avoid touching nickel, I still enjoy my gloves.  These gloves allow me to handle paper, turn pages, pick up pens, write, and so on.  I just can't answer my cell phone, or work on the computer keyboard with them.  But they work just fine when I need them.

OK, I guess I've cheered myself up by thinking of my favorite things.  Maybe I need to burst into song..............

What is Nickel? What is Nickel Allergy?

When I was diagnosed with nickel and iron oxide, I knew I would have to find out more about these metals. At that point, I learned that nickel is found in many items in my everyday life.

"Oh my gosh, how can I avoid nickel?"

Nickel is a very versatile and useful metal compound which helps to strengthen other metals.  It can be mixed with softer metals to make them more durable. It's silvery-white color makes it easy to polish up to a high shine and it is resistant to corrosion. That is why it’s used so widely in our world and is quite hard to avoid.

What's amazing is that six hundred million people are allergic to nickel. If you are one of these people you now know you’re not alone, along with Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear fame who also has a nickel allergy. But the good news is that by learning more about it

So today's post is a brief collection of quotes from the experts.  I just believe they have more accurate information than I could summarize. Let's look at what is nickel allergy:

Nickel allergy is one of the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis — an itchy rash that appears when your skin touches a usually harmless substance.
Nickel allergy is commonly associated with earrings and other jewelry, particularly jewelry associated with body piercings. But nickel can be found in many everyday items — from coins to zippers, from cellphones to eyeglass frames.
Nickel allergy can affect people of all ages. A nickel allergy usually develops after repeated or prolonged exposure to items containing nickel. Treatments can reduce the symptoms of nickel allergy. Once you develop nickel allergy, however, you will always be sensitive to the metal and need to avoid contact.

Nickel is a trace element that is found in soil, water, air and in the biosphere. It is used in manufacturing stainless steel. Nickel is the most common cause of metal allergy. Nickel allergy is a chronic and recurring skin problem.
        Mayo Clinic

Nickel salts are used for the electroplating industry: automotive,
home appliances, electronics, aerospace, etc.

Nickel allergy is actually not caused by nickel in itself.  Rather, it is the nickel salts which are formed under the effect of perspiration which is in contact with the piece of jewelry or other metal item. This phenomenon results in corrosion of the metal object.

Females are affected more commonly than males.  Approximately 10-12% of the female population and 6% of the male population are estimated to be allergic to nickel. Women are mostly exposed to nickel via non occupational sources, such as jewelry.  Men are most commonly exposed to nickel via occupational sources.
Indian Journal of Dermatology Venereology and Leprology

I've realized that no matter what I do, I am going to come in contact with nickel on a daily basis.  So it seems that by becoming aware of which items typically contain nickel, the better I will be at avoiding as much contact as possible.

And then when I MUST handle something that has nickel, I will avoid touching my face and eyes.  I will also work to wash my hands after coming in contact with nickel. That way I can limit further skin contact by accidentally touching my face or handling food following contact with nickel.

It all comes down to being aware of what items contain nickel, and then doing the best I can to follow up once I've had contact with it. Gotta do the best I can, and keep living my life. :)

Sea Salt for Eczema and Nickel/Iron Oxide Reactions

One of the worst symptoms of Nickel and Iron Oxide allergies is the eczema and itchy rash that occurs after exposure.  Sometimes the reaction helps to draw attention to the fact that something is being an irritant to your skin.  Perhaps you didn't even know that a particular piece of clothing, or jewelry had nickel in it until you got the eczema reaction.

About 20 years ago,  Dr. Douglas Leavengood, an allergist based in Biloxi, Mississippi, noticed that many of his eczema patients improved  after spending lots of time in the ocean in the summer. So Leavengood’s daughter tried it out with her own kids who suffered from eczema. She gave them daily sea salt baths and noticed their skin became less red and irritated.

Leavengood now recommends daily sea salt baths (about a handful in the tub) for all of his young patients, and commonly sees an improvement in redness, itchiness and dryness in as little as a week to 10 days. “It’s the most impressed I’ve ever been with a home therapy for anything,” he tells Allergic Living.

Scientific study would be necessary to conclusively prove that the treatment really works, as well as how it works. (Leavengood wonders if the salt may somehow help the skin to stay moist, or if perhaps it acts as an antibacterial agent.) What’s more, Leavengood’s patients often have severe cases, so they still require prescription creams and antihistamines.
Still, he says, “for a lot of mild cases, try this and a good moisturizing cream, and you’re good to go.”

How Can Sea Salt Help to Reduce

Eczema Reactions?

Eczema skin is diagnosed as being dry, not because it lacks grease or oil, but because it fails to retain water. Therefore, to correct dryness, water is added to the skin, followed by an emollient which can help to retain the moisture. This can be done by soaking the affected area in a basin of water with Dead Sea Bath Salts or soaking the entire body in a Dead Sea Salt bath for 20 minutes using warm water. Pat the skin with a soft towel to remove excess water, and immediately apply essential oil or cream to seal in moisture.

Toxins in the environment, as well as airborne allergens can greatly effect eczema. Dead Sea salt baths can help in cleansing and detoxifying the skin by removing the irritants and impurities that are otherwise trapped, while restoring some of the skin's depleted minerals.

It's a common misconception that Dead Sea Bath Salts dry out the skin. Although this would be true of many of the other types of salt on the market, Therapeutic grade Dead Sea Bath Salt containing only 4% sodium provide minerals which the skin and body need. These minerals help to strengthen skin and balance out it’s PH levels.

Use Cream or Essential Oils to Seal in Moisture

Following the Sea Salt Bath

Essential oils such as lavender, geranium, melaleuca, frankincense, or chamomile will provide soothing effects to reduce itchy, flaking, and possibility of infection.

Topical corticosteroids creams quickly help relieve itching and reduce inflammation. Barrier repair moisturizers help lock water into skin, repair damaged skin, and reduce dryness, redness, and itching. Topical immunomodulators can reduce inflammation without steroids. Many of these creams are OTC treatments.  Consult your doctor regarding which is best for you.

How Long Does it Take For

The Sea Salt Bath to Work?

The severe itching associated with eczema usually subsides in 1-2 weeks when treated with Dead Sea Bath Salts, even if the skin has not yet shown much response. Visual clearing can take up to 6 weeks. Many eczema sufferers can slightly reduce the number of Dead Sea Salt Bath’s taken per week, once they have achieved their desired results.
